Google Friend Connect for Joomla websites
Written by David Towers

Google Friend Connect JoomlaFor those of you who might have missed it, Google Friend Connect is now out of beta, so you can sign up and add it your websites.

Google Friend Connect is a service that enables you to add community features like blog comments and product reviews to your website quickly and easily.

The good news for Joomla users is that Google Friend Connect can be easily integrated within Joomla and there are already a number Joomla websites using it.

So what exactly is Google Friend Connect?

Google Friend Connect is an Open Social application, you can learn more about it on their official website and by watching this video:

If you add Google Friend Connect to your website, users can login to your website using an existing login: either their Google, Yahoo, AIM or Open ID logins. Users can then interact on your website using the Google Friend Connect gadgets. These gadgets enable users to:

  • Add comments to articles.
  • Add product reviews.
  • Interact with other website users, and enable them to become friends with each other.

Why would you want to use Google Friend Connect?

Google Friend Connect basically enables you to add a social aspect to your website with relative ease. The fact that the service integrates with ID services like Google, Yahoo, AIM and OpenID means that it's really easy for users to register with your website and login.

Which Joomla websites are using Joomla Friend Connect?

Here are a couple of examples of websites using Google Friend Connect on their Joomla websites:

If you would like your website to be added to this list, please contact us or leave a comment below.

How to install Google Friend Connect in Joomla?

It is relatively straight forward to use Google Friend Connect on your Joomla website:

  1. Create a Google Friend Connect account here.
  2. Validate your website.
  3. Choose which gadgets you want to install.
  4. Login to your Joomla Administrator backed, and create a custom HTML module (Extensions > Module Manager > New > Customer HTML).
  5. Copy the code provided by Google Friend Connect and paste it into the custom HTML module "Custom Output" field.
  6. Select where you want the module to appear in "Menu Assignment" field and publish the module.
It is that simple! If you have any problems with your Joomla text editor removing some of the code, you can use the Jumi extension to insert custom code in modules.

What do you think of Google of using Friend Connect with Joomla?

We think Google Friend Connect is going to be an easy and interesting way of stimulating community interaction on Joomla websites.

What do you think about Google Friend Connect? Please leave your comments below.

I've waited a long time for Friend Connect to go public, but now that I have access, I'm trying to find an excuse to use it smilies/smiley.gif Our 2 main sites JoomlaPraise.com and CMSMarket.com have community aspects, but I can't see a way to use Friend Connect, bc they both involve tying info to the user profile, whether the info is orders, subscriptions, or products. What do you think? Would it only make sense to use Friend Connect for sites where you're not using ecommerce or community components like a simple blog site?

Google Friend Connect does not connect to Joomla. Google is aware of this and is working on something. See the google friend connect group: http://groups.google.com/group...d73ca4a279
To Aman. Paste the code through the html button on your editor or turn your editor off before you paste.

Dave thanks for pointing out that it's not yet possible to sync the users through Google Friend Connnect with an existing database users on a Joomla site. While this is true, it is still possible to use Google Friend Connect on Joomla.

Quitian, glad to see you have used it on your site.

Kyle, sorry I just realised I didn't respond to your question.

Interesting point, I think I'd agree that as it currently stands, without the possibility to sync between the Joomla database and the Google Friend Connect member list, it would not make sense to use it for an ecommerce site or a fullon community site. Nevertheless, I think potentially in the future it could become more useful if the option to sync becomes a reality.

I have added GFC using a template hack, but I am thinking of using it as the base commenting system for the site.
What I can't find out, (and would rather know before I start playing), is can I add a code block to articles on a per-category basis?

Once I know that I have enough justification to delve deeper.

Thanks Ronildo and Robert, I have added both your websites to the list.

Robert, I haven't tried using the using the Google Friend Connect commenting system so can't advise if you can block certain articles or not.

I have used GFC for commenting on a blog, that is not the issue.
What I wanted to know is, does the Jumi extension let me add a code block to articles in Joomla, at (preferably) a per category level, or (at least) a per section level?

Sorry if I was unclear

Hi Robert,

No worries. I'm not sure how you could do that, sorry! You could however choose where you want it to appear in the "Menu Assignment" option of the menu, but this only relates to the menu, not sections/categories.

If you have a friend connect enabled website then why don't you submit it to the google friend connect directory. The site is free and no reciprocal link is required, our aim is just to deliver a great resource for friend connect sites.

We are also planning to use joomla on our directory as the main blog and content manager.

I don't get the value proposition other than driving users to Register at Google and sending traffic to their network.

What does it bring to my users?

How can I monetize it?

Will it bring me more traffic?

Will it increase my site's stickeyness?

Does it admin save time or money?

???

The module works well, however it is unfortunate that is can not sync with your current login system (being default Joomla or Community Builder). Hopefully future version will have this.

Anyways you can take a look at my site to see how it looks. Maybe you can even connect smilies/wink.gif

Can anyone provide info/example sites showing some of their best practices for "Friend Connect"? While installing some of the modules was trouble-free, I'm interested in how others have made FC a good tool for their readers as well as one that helps drive traffic to their site.

Thanks!

This "works" but it doesn't make sense for a community site since it doesn't integrate with your database. So user's "join" my site (to use the Google lingo) but they can't view the member's only profiles, or post in the forums (I only allow members to post there), or message or interact with my "real" members. Even if I was just using Joomla for a website for a pizza joint what benefit is there for me to hand over the keys to my kingdom to Google? And I can't really see how Google is ever going to be willing to share user data with my website. The security risks are just too high. I think the best we could hope for would be to use Google Friend Connect as a method of authenticating a user.

Thanks for adding my site as an example site!

I'm still working up to using friend connect for commenting.

Many people seem to have lost interest; looks like "Data Stronghold Technology News" have dumped Friend Connect, but it is improving rapidly.

I'm sticking with it!

Saw that some people were seeing the "unable to connect to http://yoursite.com. I found a possible fix for some instances. Make sure you dont have the jumi module set as the firt module in the list when publishing. I just started a site and added GFC on it as well, heres the link. http://www.pwnhomes.com

I ended up having to install Jumi to get Google's Friend Connect to work with my Joomla! site, but even for a noob like myself it was clear and simple to do. I highly recommend both tools in conjunction. I am excited at the possibilities, especially with Jumi in my toolbox.

I had a little trouble setting Google's friends connect up on my site, but it seems to be working now. I am still having a few issues - like comments not showing up though the app shows that two have been made, and we're having trouble adding friends and receiving friend requests as well as messages, I think. I'm sure I'll get it sorted out though. I may have to add a couple more gadgets...
