Our first Joomla tutorial couldn't really be any simpler: we're going to show you how to install the content management system Joomla (v1.0.13) on your webhost using Fantastico. Fantastisco is an auto-installer script that is available with certain hosting packages. In this example we're using Hostmonster, but there are plenty of other hosts that offer Fantastico as well.
First step, login to your host. If you haven’t already got a host, you should signup for an account .
If your host is running Cpanel like HostMonster does, scroll down to Software/Services and select “Fantastico De Luxe”.
Once you are in Fantastico, choose “Joomla” from the side menu, it’s under the “Content Management” section.
You should come to page that looks like this:
This is your Fantastico Joomla control panel. (If you have already installed Joomla on your server, it will be listed here and you have the option to “remove” the installation. In our example, we have already installed Joomla on our server under the folder Joomla113.)
As we want to install Joomla, simply select "New Installation".
Here you need to
select the domain to install Joomla on, in this example its
goodwebpractices.com.
If you would like to
install Joomla in a folder on a domain, then you need to enter the name of that
folder in the directory box. In our example, we are leaving this box blank:
this means that we are installing Joomla in the root directory of the domain
goodwebpractices.com
Enter the admin user
name and password you would like to have. Try and be inventive when choosing
your username rather than opting for the usual "admin". We recommend using
password generator software like KeePass to generate secure passwords like the
one we have used in our example: "TRU2EHygean2a158LwBJ".
Under base
configuration, the admin e-mail is the one that will be used to send emails
from when you are running the site so we recommend using an email address like
This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
, rather than using a personal address.
The admin name you enter will be used when you send out emails or post new articles.>
The sitename will be
used as default in the title tags on each page.
If you're not too sure
about what to enter in any of these, don't worry, as you can change them easily
after through Joomla administrator control panel.
Once you've checked
all the information is correct, click "install Joomla"
This page confirms
that the installation is going ahead and will automatically create the MYSQL
database and user that Joomla requires to be installed. You don't need to
really worry about this so click "finish installation"
Congratulations!
Joomla is now installed on your server!
Make sure you write
down your username and password on piece of paper and keep it safe. It's a good
idea to bookmark the URL of your admin access point too, just click on the
(Bookmark this!) link.
Try going to where
you installed Joomla to see how it looks.
So there you go, it
really is amazingly simple to install Joomla using Fantastico on a host like
HostMonster.
