7 Firefox Extensions to Manage Your Life
Written by Louise Baker

Firefox logoFirefox is arguably the most powerful web browser available, partly because of its available add-ons, which include plugins and extensions. While these are commonly confused and misunderstood as synonymous, they’re actually different. Plugins help Firefox perform specific functions like playing various types of multimedia files and viewing special graphic formats. In contrast, extensions add to the existing functionality of Firefox, and range from adding another toolbar element to an entirely new feature. There are thousands of available Firefox extensions, but here are just 7 geared toward helping you manage your life.

1. The All-in-One Sidebar

The All-in-One Sidebar - This handy extension is essential for every Firefox user. It adds an easily customizable sidebar to your choice of the right or left side of your browser, which is easily hidden when you don’t need it. The sidebar allows you to access your bookmarks, history, downloads, and plugins. Most importantly, the sidebar can show the content of all the other extensions you download, which removes the sometimes cluttered look that emerges when you use a lot of extensions.

2. Beatnik

Beatnik - Looking for a simple news reader without all the clutter of some RSS news feeds? Beatnik might be what you're looking for. While this extension provide all the bells and whistles of some other available RSS feed readers, but it’s ease of use definitely makes up for what it lacks. If you’re looking for a feed reader but don’t need a bunch of extra features, Beatnik is perfect for you.

3. Gmail Manager

Gmail Manager - Gmail Manager is a must-have for Gmail users, as it eliminates the need to keep your Gmail open in a tab in order to see when you receive a new message. The extension presents your email in a status bar pop-up. Best of all, for everyone with more than one Gmail account, the Manager can show information for all of them. It’s extremely customizable, and can even be set to automatically switch to the account with new mail.

4. BugMeNot

BugMeNot - This neat extension does exactly what its name suggests - it allows you to skip “mandatory” web site registrations by providing you with a username and password for the site you’re visiting, which allows you to move on and get on with your life.

5. Scrapbook

Scrapbook - Scrapbook is essential for researchers, writers, and anyone else who would like to have a searchable record of web highlights and clippings. By highlighting bits of text, you can save parts of web pages along with the URL to your computer. Scrapbook allows you to organize the clippings in folders, change the titles of clippings, add additional notes, and sort by date or alphabetically.

6. Slogger

Slogger -  Looking for an extension to archive sites you've visited? Slogger saves timestamped versions of sites whenever you view them. It permits you to selectively log sites or choose the auto-log option, which is convenient but can take up a lot of space on your computer.

7. FoxyTunes

FoxyTunes - This powerful extension has the ability to control over thirty media players, including iTunes and Windows Media Player right from the Firefox window. It displays artist and track information, play controls, and a volume adjuster directly in your browser. It also provides lyrics, videos, artist bios, and a whole lot more, so you’ll rarely have to waste time switching between Firefox and your player-of-choice again.
