Dell Streak 5 overview

Dell Streak 5 is a 5- inch tablet from Dell Inc. Streak 5, with its slick features and smart technology, works well as a phone. It also enables users to read, surf the internet, and watch videos online. It is difficult to say if Streak 5 is a smartphone or a tablet, and that precisely seems to be Dell's intention. It is too small to be a tablet and too big to be a smartphone. However, since it is possible to fit Dell Streak 5 into your pocket, many consider it to be a smartphone rather than a tablet.

Design

Streak 5 is simple yet slick in appearance. It has a very pleasing and ergonomically efficient design. At the right- hand side there is the volume rocker, headphone socket, power button and the camera shutter. Apart from proprietary data port, there is nothing on the left hand side. Careful positioning of the ports means that Streak 5 can be easily hooked up to a home entertainment system. The symmetric design makes it easy to carry it around hold it in your hand and the Corning Gorilla Glass protects the touch screen. There are 3 capacitive buttons at the bottom of Streak 5. These are Menu, Home and Back. These enable the user to easily interact with the different aspects of the device.

Features

One of the special features of this tablet is that it enables users to make and receive calls without using a head set. This device is extremely portable as it is possible to comfortably fit this into pockets. The 5 - inch screen makes it possible to read e-books or content on websites without causing any stain to your eyes. It has a 5 Megapixels camera. The camera is auto focus with two light emitting diode (LED) flash. Although the pictures taken by this camera is a bit over exposed, it is possible to solve this problem if the LED flash is turned off. The battery capacity of Streak is rated at 1530 mph and it will almost last a day of continuous use.

Software

The Streak 5 runs on Android 2.2 version and a 1 GHz Scorpion processor powers it. The processor is really fast and responsive. Dell Streak 5 is equipped with Stage software which enables users to have easy access to various applications, music, web, video and of course, social networking. It is possible to customize the home screen of Streak. It is also possible to multi-task 4 to 5 different applications simultaneously without any problem.

Streak 5 supports various audio and video formats. Audio formats like AMR, WAV, MP3, WMA, eAAC+ and video formats like H.263/H.264., MPEG4, .3GP and WMV are supported by Streak 5. But it does not support OGG, FLAC and DviX file formats. Streak 5 also features Android Market which enables users to download various applications.

Conclusion

If you love to have a large screen device that integrates both smartphone and tablet, Streak 5 is surely a great choice. The overall performance level of Streak 5 is excellent. This easily portable tablet which enables users to watch videos, read, surf the net and make and receive phone calls. But Streak 5 may not be a suitable choice for rough and tough usage as it is a fragile device.

Pros:

  • Make and receive calls just like an ordinary phone

  • Interesting applications

Cons:

  • Does not support some common video formats
  • It is delicate, hence not suited for a rough-and-tumble, fast paced life style
