PS3 GelaSkin Review - Ink Pond ReviewGamingZap.com have sent me a set of their PS3 skins to review - the Ink Pond PS3 Gelaskin and the matching Ink Pond PS3 Controller Gelaskin. I've come across Gelaskins before as I've applied one to my iPhone 3G a couple of years ago. It stayed on there for a good few months until I wanted a change of look, so I'm expecting good things from these PS3 skins, although it will be a test to see if I still want to keep them on come the end of the week. Who are Gelaskin?Gelaskin have been around for quite a while, and make skins for a whole host of tech gadgets, from Kindles to iPhones to games consoles such as the Xbox and PS3. They have a huge number of graphic designers tucked away working frantically to supply them with the best designs on the net. There are literally hundreds to choose from, the mind boggles at just how many skins they have created! The skins themselves are essentially removable covers, or stickers (but very strong ones), that attach to your device. The materials they are made from are tough and protect against scratches, and have been specially chosen after much research. The skins adhesive contains patented technology, which prevents any any bubbles from forming, meaning you have a form fitting skin that's going to stay stuck to your device. Ink Pond Gelaskin DesignHaving said that there were so many amazing PS3 skins to choose from, it wasn't easy to pick one to review. However, I went with the Ink Pond design by Nanami Cowdroy. It's a striking black and white design that covers the whole of the top of your PS3. It's not as bright as some of the other designs around, but I wanted something that was both creative and intricate, but not garish. The skin has a spray can in the bottom left, and from it emits an amazing montage of images, including a random selection of fish, pencils and spray cans. The play on words "Ink Pond" is cleverly done, and obviously bears no resemblance to the classic storage place for fountain pens of old. It's a modern twist, that looks amazing.
![]() How easy was it to apply?Having applied one of these before, I have to say that Gelaskins are relatively easy to apply to your device. The instructions weren't complicated at all, and the the design of the Gelaskins themselves allow you to make some mistakes as the PS3 skin could be easily pulled off and reapplied without losing much of its stickiness. Once the skin was on my games console it looked great, with the skin sitting flush up against the sleek edges of the PS3, but not overlapping, so it would take a conscious effort to try to remove it. I don't think the skin would ever accidentally peel off either. Overall, application was extremly easy, and the results look great. PS3 Controller SkinGamingZap.com also included the matching Ink Pond Playstation Controller Skin for me to review. I have to say my initial impression isn't quite as positive as it is about the actual PS3 skin. The PS3 has a nice flat surface which is just calling out for a creative design, but for me the controllers already look cool, and adding anything more to them will take away from their sleek, contoured design. However, I wasn't about to turn down an opportunity to review a product I haven't tried yet so I applied the skins despite my initial scepticism.
The skin was predictably a lot harder to apply that the PS3 skin, coming in a number of different sections to apply - as you you can probably see from the above image. This took some concentration to get right, and was a little fiddly, but to be honest, there's never going to be any short cuts to getting this done, as the skin will need to fit around your d-pad, joysticks and all your buttons and triggers for the PS3 Controller to work properly. The Ink Pond design for the controller has much less white in it and focusses on the actual spray can area. The design as I've said earlier is awesome, but can't help but feel its a little wasted and too busy for the controller. Overall, the controller skin is ok - I don't think I'll keep it on here, but that's more a matter of personal preference rather than the skin not being any good. Conclusion Gelaskins are without a doubt the best skins on the market. They are extremely well made, cut to fit the device perfectly and have some amazing designs. I've very pleased with the PS3 one, and might even consider an Xbox skin one day, but was slightly less impressed with the controller skin. It's more that for me the controller doesn't offer enough empty space to fill with any more cool designs, however for those that like that, the matching skins can look absolutely awesome. Pros:
Cons:
A big thanks to GamingZap.com for supplying me with the skins to try out. Comments (1)
