Samsung Galaxy Tab KeyCase Review

GearZap.com have sent me yet another product to review, this time it's the Samsung Galaxy Tab KeyCase which is very similar to the iPad Keycase I recently review but of course for the iPad's Android counterpart. It's a nifty piece of kit which effectively turns you Galaxy Tab into a pseudo netbook if you prefer typing on a hard keyboard. So here's my take on it.

The Folio Case

Where many accessories fall down is that they try to do too many things as once, and instead of doing one thing well, they end up doing a poor job of lots of things. I've seen many 5-in-1 cases that promise everything, but deliver on nothing, so I'm pleased to say that the KeyCase actually is a good case as well as a keyboard that isn't too bulky. The faux leather is surprisingly good quality, and looks like it will be tough and durable. The case also neatly folds together, and is help firmly shut by the magnetic clasp. This Samsung Galaxy Tab case is certainly not going to win any prizes for innovative looks, but it's sleek and practical which is a good bonus.

The Stand

The Case also features a built in stand, which folds out at the back of the KeyCase, allowing you to position your Galaxy Tab into the desired viewing angle, either for media viewing or of course using the built in Bluetooth keyboard for typing. The stand, although not rubberised at one end provides good grip and all angles, and I didn't feel like there was much change the kick stand would slip - a good indication of a strong design.

The Bluetooth Keyboard

One of the main reasons to buy this KeyCase is of course for the built in keyboard, without it the case and stand would certainly be very run of the mill, and unlikely to sell especially well being so generic. Of course one of the options for most people might be just to purchase a separate Samsung Galaxy Tab Keyboard, and either carry it around with you for the odd time you need it, or simply leave it on your desk to connect to. However, for those who spend lots of time needing to work while commuting, or who are constantly on the move, then this KeyCase is ideal, and arguably one of the most innovative Galaxy Tab accessories around at the moment.

The keyboard itself is made from a spongy type plastic, it's not the normal hard keys that people are most used to, and this took a little while for me to become accustomed to before I could type with any fluency. The size of the keyboard is also good, it's not so small that I accidently hit the wrong keys, the spacing between them was just right. The bluetooth keyboard connected with ease first time round, only taking a few seconds which was great to see. Overall it's fairly easy to use, but feels a little cheap, even though it works well, so it's only really let down by the quality of the plastic. I've also been told that the battery life should be close to 100 hours, so I'm not expecting it to stop working any time soon.

Conclusion

As I mentioned earlier, this is a good case, and one that performs a number of functions well - being a case, a stand and a Bluetooth keyboard, so it gets good marks. If I were to improve the case, my focus would be on the design of the case itself, it's a little bland and it would be good to see some kind of unique styling so that I was happy to show off the case to people. However, this can be forgiven as it's one of the first cases with built in keyboards to appear for the Tab - I'm sure there will be higher quality versions coming soon.

Pros:

  • Solid case design
  • Useful stand with multiple viewing angles
  • Keyboard connects quality
  • Good size keyboard

Cons:

  • Feels a little cheap
  • Only for those who aren't happy using the on screen keyboard.

Thanks for GearZap.com for sending over the KeyCase to review.
