Tritton AX Pro Universal Headset Review

GamingZap.com have been kind enough to send us a brand new Tritton AX Pro headset to test here on GoodWebPractices. As an avid gamer, this is one of the first high quality headsets I've got my hands on, so I thought it would be a a good idea to share my thoughts on the headset. Here's my review:

Tritton the brand

For those of you who don't know, Tritton are renowned for making some of the best gaming accessories around, for both Xbox, PS3 and PC. A US company, Tritton specialise in making high end gaming headsets, and they are best known for the Tritton AX 720 and their top of the range Tritton AX Pro which I'll be reviewing today. Sadly, I haven't had the opportunity to use the AX 720, so I'll be unable to draw too many comparisons, but my comments will be based on the stand alone AX Pro unit. Some of the other top end Tritton Headsets can also be purchased from GamingZap.com

Unboxing of the Tritton AX Pro

As is becoming quite common these days, I thought I'd better mention some of the unboxing, as many premium products are including more intricate and impressive packing, as the unboxing forms part of the 'experience' you get with your purchase. The box itself is quite impressive, in a striking orange colour. The front features a cool fold open lid on the front, which, when pulled back reveals the amazing silver headset neatly displayed inside. It's certainly an impressive looking package, although I have to say I'm more excited about the actual produce inside!

The Headset

So, onto the actual headset itself. The first thing I notice is that the xbox headset, which is in fact universal and can be used as a PS3 headset or a PC Gaming one, feels incredibly well built. It has a certain weight to it which fills me with confidence that it has been well made and is likely to last a very long time - certainly something I would expect when purchaing a £150 product. Having said that, the headset does not feel like it's weighing down on my head, and having used it for extended gaming sessions I can say that at no point did it feel like a relief to take it off. The headset features extremely comfortable ear cups, if that's what you can call them, which are softly padded, but retain their shape well. For my ears (and I'm not sure whether people have different size ears or not!) it fitted well, providing a good degree of isolation, meaning I was not distracted by any other noises that might be going on whilst playing. The Headset features a neat orange tritton logo on the outer edge, and is a brushed silver colour - very striking. It's important to say that the headset also fitted my head well, with its adjustable band across the top.

The Sound

Wow, what can I say about the sound? Sadly I don't think my words will do any justice to the amazing experience that using the headphone is. I tried it with a number of games including Call of Duty and the pinpoint 5.1 surround sound was simply stunning. As a bit of an audiophile - I've invested in a great hifi previously, I was nothing short of impressed with the crisp, fast and responsive tones I received from the headset. The bass was not overpowering in any way, as is often the case with cheaper headsets, it really did make the game feel alive. The directional sound from the drivers is also an amazing experience - think cinema surround sound but more intense! It's certainly a great experience to hear someone sneaking up behind you and be able to quickly turn around and kill them before they get you - simply because of your headset!

In Line Controller

The Tritton AX Pro also has an inline controller which enables you to play to your heart's content with a whole number of configurations. I didn't get into the depths of what can be done, but I've been assured that you can adjust time delays and a whole manner of other things. Most importantly for me, the in line controller features an accurate and responsive volume / mix control for the voice - something that is so key to online gaming these days. We all know that people's voice volumes vary so much, so it's nice to be able to switch between an in game volume, to a louder setting when in the game lobby. Useful to say the least.

The bad bits

It's a bit tricky to pull out some of the bad bits. It would be easy to say the price as it is an expensive product, but then you nearly always get what you pay for - and as someone who is not adverse to spending money on good quality audio equipment, the price did not seem outrageous, especially when you compare it to the Turtle Beach X41 headset which comes in at a similar price. One of the downsides to the headset is that there are a large number of cables and wires to set up, which were initially a little confusing, however I'd expect someone who purchased this headset to generally know what they were doing and that they would be willing to spend the time setting up and configuring the headset, especially with such an investment made.

Conclusion

Overall the Tritton AX Pro is a fantastic headset - it's sound quality is simply superb, and breathes a whole new life into both online and offline gaming, however such quality comes at a price - however, if you're in the market for some high quality audio equipment, then you should certainly consider the Tritton AX Pro headset. The build quality is also excellent, feeling well made and extremely comfortable, even after extended periods of use.

Pros:

  • Made by top brand - Tritton
  • True 5.1 Surround Sound
  • Inline remote
  • Universal so can be used on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC

Cons:

  • Expensive price
  • Slightly confusing cable and setup

A big thanks to GamingZap.com for sending me the headset to test. Why not check out the rest of their xbox headset range or their xbox controllers?
